Documenting the Socialist Tradition

"Those who cannot remember the past
are doomed to repeat it." -George Santayana

Over the past 100 years, Canadian socialists have written a vast amount of material on the political issues they considered important, but virtually none of those writings are generally available today. As a result, their experiences, ideas, analyses and insights socialists are unavailable to the radical left today.

The Socialist History Project can't possibly fill in all the gaps, but it will make a start by making key documents available on the web, and, if possible, in more permanent form. We will focus on:

  • Key documents such as manifestos, resolutions, speeches, and debates.

  • Articles, reports and other documents  that illustrate what Canadian socialists actually did -- how they approached the political and social events of their time. Most of these will be articles by the participants themselves; some will be by contemporary observers, both friendly and hostile.

  • Reminiscences -- first-person accounts by the women and men who converted the ideas of socialism into a living movement.

We welcome suggestions, ideas and contributions. Please address all correspondence to the email address shown on our About page.

We will also publish essays about the history of revolutionary socialism in Canada. See the Historical Essays page for more details.
